Council Corner

In response to public opinion comments from Nov. 8

By Scott V Whelpley, Mukilteo City Council | Nov 14, 2018

I understand your frustration and concern about the expenditure of your tax dollars being wasted. This is exactly why the council has decided that we need legal representation in an effort to recover those misappropriated dollars.

This is not just for the council or some political agenda, this is for the integrity of the tax-paying citizens of Mukilteo.  My investigation and discoveries of the wasteful abuse of spending of your tax dollars has revealed a pattern that is not only dishonorable but a violation of state law.

We’ve all witnessed the blatant abuse of authority and perceived entitlements by our elected and hired individuals over the past few years… this stops now!

I have two responsibilities as your elected official:

1) The citizens: their safety, wellbeing, and adult supervision of their tax dollars

2) The City staff: respecting them and providing them the support they need to continue to deliver the needed service to our citizens.

As for your question, YES! ... absolutely! I will pay the $2,500 of my share by donating the $455.33 a month salary I receive as your council representative back to the general fund over my last year as a councilmember if we do not have the ability to recoup those misallocated funds.

Also, if I am gravely mistaken in my assumptions and discoveries (concerning all the personnel issues and the misuses of your tax dollars by the executive and other departments), and the state Auditor finds there are no significant “concerns,” reasons/evidence to pursue any sort of further inquiries or pursuits of compensation, I will submit a formal apology and resign my council seat effective immediately.

But if I am correct, I would hope those who adamantly supported and defended this appalling abuse of authority and power would be so inclined to publicly appear before the City Council and speak during public comment to expend their gratitude and appreciation to those councilmembers who were courageous enough to stand by their oath and risk their reputations to defend the City’s best interests.

I appreciate your input and being the voice for others who think and feel the same.
