Kamiak and Mariner both had reasons to celebrate after last week’s 4A District boys and girls golf tournaments.

The Knights captured a pair of team championships and had the top two finishers in the boys tournament. The Marauders had the top finisher in the girls tourney.

Kamiak junior Alvin Kwak won his second straight individual title, edging teammate Devin Kim in the second hole of a playoff Wednesday, May 16, at Snohomish Golf Course. Kwak shot an opening round of 68 and had a 72 on day two for a 4-under-par 140. Kim opened with a 71 and then closed with a 69.

Three other Knights – freshman Joshua Clogston (78/74 – 152, fifth), junior Alex Kim (79/74 – 153, sixth) and junior Whistler Pascual (76/81 – 157, 10th) – qualified for state. The five players is the most Kamiak has ever advanced to the state tournament and the district title was school’s 15th overall.

The Kamiak girls team also won the district championship Tuesday, May 15, at the Avalon Golf Course in Mount Vernon, and qualified five players to the state tournament.

Mariner’s Jazzelle Caparas finished first and was followed by Kamiak’s Jane Kim (second), Annette Vo (fourth), Regina Park (fifth), Mingie Kim (seventh) and Rachel Ponting (eighth).

The 4A boys state tournament is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, May 22-23 at the Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick. The girls tourney will be at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
