The Kamiak cheer team placed second at Kentwood High School’s Holiday Invitational state qualifier on Saturday, Dec. 15.

The team qualified for state in the Game Day division, a new category added last year.

“I felt we had a good chance at qualifying, even though teams rarely qualify the first time ever competing,” Kamiak coach Kim Nelson said. “Last season, we traveled to state to watch the Game Day division, so we knew the level of competition, and the degree of difficulty needed to compete at the state level. This fall, the cheerleaders analyzed the rubrics so they understood the components and how they would be judged.”

The Game Day category simulates an actual sideline situation: band dance, situational sideline chant, crowd-involvement cheer and ends with the school’s fight song. All four components must be completed in under three minutes.

“My team executed a great routine choreographed by Kirsten Collison, volunteer assistant coach,” Nelson said. “Not only did the team qualify for state but [it] took second place behind last year’s Game Day state champions. I am so proud of the dedication Kamiak cheerleaders bring to their school all year long.”
