On June 26, the day after school dismissed for summer, the Kamiak Cheer team headed to the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma to begin preparing for the 2019-20 school year.

UCA camp focuses on teaching new sideline material, safe stunting, leadership, and school spirit. Each of the four days, Kamiak cheer worked hard from nearly sunrise to sunset learning the material to perform at a topnotch level.

Per Kamiak coach Kim Nelson, the Kamiak cheer team is known for hitting sharp, precise motions, and executing solid, clean stunts, and senior captains Baohan Vo, Kaitlin Harrison, Alexia Bravo, Danielle Manahan, Kadir Gilbert and Siobhan Mukomela provided excellent leadership to ensure the tradition continued.

This year’s team awards include:  first place overall coed game day, first place coed sideline, second place overall coed rally routine, and second place coed cheer.

The team also received multiple spirit sticks and the “Banana” award. These awards are especially valued because they are earned by exemplifying spirit and leadership.

Individual awards include:  first place jump contest: Kadir Gilbert; All Americans: Kaitlin Harrison, Kadir Gilbert and Alexia Bravo; and Pin-It Forward: Baohan Vo and Kylie Tiedemann.

Overall, Nelson said Kamiak had a very successful camp session, and came away understanding hard work does pay off. Kamiak cheer is excited to return to practice in August to get ready for another great year of supporting Kamiak High School and the Mukilteo community.
