State tournament will see expanded 32-entry bracket

Ten Kamiak and Mariner wrestlers are headed to the big show in the Tacoma Dome.

After the snowy weather resulted the unprecedented cancellation of the regional tournaments, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association unveiled on Monday, Feb. 11, a 32-entry Mat Classic XXXI bracket that will feature all of the regional qualifiers from across the state.

The state championships are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 15 and continue until 8 p.m. Wrestling resumes on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 9:45 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. when everyone will break until the parade of champions at 4:45 p.m. Finals are set to start at 5 p.m.

Kamiak’s Guage Holland (boys 152-pound) and Diana Cantini (girls 110) both won sub-regional titles. Solana Ordonez finished second in the girls 100 division. Joining Holland in the boys tournament are Richard Chung (fourth at 113), Sam Furlong-Benedetti (third at 145) and Nick Garza (third at 285).

Mariner’s Ryan Fry (160) and Jason Vasilchenko (220) both placed second at sub-regionals. The two will be accompanied by Jose Zamora Solorzano (third at 106) and Joseph Adee (third at 138).
