Kamiak High School’s spring musical production of “Footloose” took top honors June 12 during the 15th-annual 5th Avenue Awards at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.

“When they read the name, the Kamiak section of the audience erupted,” Theatre Director Bryan Sullivan said. “The entire Kamiak contingent ran up on stage to accept the award, and we closed out the show by hugging each other and patting everyone on the back.”

Beyond winning the Outstanding Overall Musical Production award, Kamiak also won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. That award recognized Jeff LaSorella, who played the character Willard.

Kamiak had garnered 12 nominations in 21 categories, more than any other production in the state. More than 100 high schools participated, and 16 received awards.

“We were holding out hope for that big award, and we knew our show was right up there with these other productions,” Sullivan said. “I’m so proud of everyone involved in the production.”
