Kamiak’s Richard Chung surprised himself with a first-place finish at the Edmonds Invitational.

Chung edged Edmonds-Woodway’s Baylor Denkinger 4-3 in overtime to claim the 113-pound title Saturday, Dec. 1, at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

“I went in there knowing he was a state wrestler,” Chung said. “I was expecting to lose, but I got all my energy up. … I wanted to pull through for the team.”

Chung recorded a pin over Spanaway Lake’s Dillan Santos at the 3-minute, 36-second mark in the quarterfinals. The Kamiak standout then recorded a 9-1 decision over Burlington-Edison’s Steven Cook in the semifinals.

The championship match was a defensive battle that featured two wrestlers who competed at last year’s state tournament, although in different classifications – Chung (4A) and Denkinger (3A).

“He was really good,” Chung said. “I felt like we were about equally matched.”

Mariner’s Joseph Adee won a 10-8 decision over Hazen’s Dino Bui to place third at 145. Teammate Ryan Fry took fifth place at 160, defeating Southridge’s Ryan Stayrook 15-5.

Kamiak’s Drew Kindle, wrestling up a weight class, took third place at 285.
