Kamiak’s late season offensive struggles continued in its 4A District 1 girls basketball tournament opener.

The Knights connected on only 1 of 12 3-point attempts and shot in the 20-percent range overall from the field in a 59-49 loss to Monroe Thursday, Feb. 8, at Kamiak High School.

Kamiak (11-10) defeated the Bearcats (9-13) twice during the regular season but shot the ball much better in both contests.

The Knights led 23-22 at halftime but then were outscored 18-8 in the third quarter.

“Mostly our offense is just not clicking right now,” Kamiak coach Brian Norman said. “We’ve struggled a little bit in the third quarter. We’re looking for ways to come out with some intensity right now. We’re searching for someone to step up.”

Monroe’s Monique Fierke led all scorers with 27 points and was the only Bearcat in double figures. Kamiak senior Alex Gallaher scored 17 points and junior Hunter Beirne finished with 15 points. Senior Carolyn Brunner had 9 points.

The Knights scored 49 points in the first half in a 77-66 victory over the Bearcats in late January. But coming into the district tournament, the Knights had lost their last three regular season contests.

Defense and lack of rebounding also hurt Kamiak in the district playoff defeat.

“The rebounding thing keeps biting us,” Norman said. “We can’t secure that first rebound. We’re giving up more than one chance. … We’re giving up way too many second chance points.”

Norman also said that the Knights need to step up their defense.

“We’re not getting after it like we need to,” the Kamiak coach said. “The 50/50 balls loose on the ground, we’re not getting to. We need to hustle.”

The loss sends Kamiak into a loser-out game against district rival Mariner on Tuesday, Feb. 13, after the Beacon’s deadline. The Knights beat the Marauders in a loser-out game in last year’s district tournament.
