Letter: Keep Mukilteo Transit taxes in Mukilteo, vote Jennifer Gregerson for mayor

Nov 01, 2017

Voters in Mukilteo have got their ballot to close out what has been a most rambunctious and viscous election campaign.

But I want to talk about making sure Community Transit is responsive to Mukilteo by electing for mayor a candidate with a surefire lock on a Community Transit board seat.

I'm not as Lynn McKenney alleged last month, "Doing more political talk for Community Transit, vs. our community."  No ma'am, I want transit sales tax dollars collected from Mukilteo citizens and visitors alike to stay in Mukilteo.  Not to mention, I am publicly critical of transit agencies up and down the Puget Sound and want all transit boards to be directly elected.

To me, this election for Mukilteo’s mayor includes the question of should Mukilteo have a seat on the Community Transit Board so the money is fairly distributed?  As a regional transit advocate, I have been reassured Mukilteo’s mayor Jennifer Gregerson, who by becoming an officer on the Community Transit Board and engaging in continuing education, has a guaranteed lock in ensuring the Community Transit Board has a Mukilteo representative.

Also, I would even make the allegation in the wake of the tragic loss of the Mukilteo Park and Ride opportunity that I suspect one reason Community Transit staff are anxiously waiting until after the general election to release their strategic plan to serve Paine Field is seeing if Mukilteo voters will elect a mayor hostile to Community Transit before investing more staff time - which is a financial expense, political capital and more to address genuine Mukilteo needs.  I want Community Transit to embrace Mukilteo and Mukilteo to embrace public transportation equally.  So if I'm doing political talk for any entity Mrs. McKenney, it's the wonderful Mukilteo community.

Please vote for my friend Jennifer Gregerson for Mukilteo Mayor for public transportation and fair play.  It's a vote for your community to get a Community Transit that responds to our shared needs.
