Letter: Public apology to Glen Pickus

Dec 13, 2017

A few weeks ago I printed a letter from James Sanchez (“An open letter to Mayor Gregerson”) regarding his view on FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) and in that letter, he made some accusations against Glen Pickus, a former City of Mukilteo employee.

In his letter, he claimed that Pickus is a supporter of FGM based on past conversations with Pickus through email during Pickus’ time in working for the city of Mukilteo.

There are a few things that I should have done when I thought about publishing the letter.

I should have contacted Pickus directly, and I should have tried to get access to those conversations through public records requests before publishing the letter.

I didn’t do either of those things and now, understandably, Mr. Pickus is upset.

So, to Glen Pickus, I am sorry for the way that I handled this and for any harm that it has caused.

I did not take the appropriate steps that I should have when I thought about publishing the letter.

I should have gotten a lot more information than I did, and overall I probably shouldn’t have published that letter to begin with and I feel very bad about it.

I appreciate Mr. Pickus for holding me accountable the way that he has, and he has handled the situation admirably.

I take full responsibility as editor, as that was my choice and no one else’s.

I am better than this, I will be better than this and I will not let something like this happen again.
