Zieve: I agree with Yoo

I agree with the letter by Mr. James Yoo (Mukilteo Beacon, May 22, Page 4) that the Mukilteo public is not well served by seat swapping.

Mukilteo citizens expect that the incumbent Scott Whelpley will run for Position 5 and Richard Emery will run for Position 6.

Two weeks before the filing week I contacted Steve Schmalz (Position 4) and asked him if he intended to run again. He said no, therefore I decided to run for Position 4, which should have been an open seat. I put my name in the first day that registration was open, which was May 13.

Imagine my surprise that first one and then two incumbents were running against me!

I drove to the courthouse to switch to Position 6 and I was surprised to see Richard Emery already there sitting in the lobby.

I told him what I was doing when I walked in and he had an entire hour to switch back to Position 6, but he did not.

In Position 5, two family members registered to run for the same position and one was removed after the filing deadline.

This is also a deceptive practice and should be discouraged.

Peter Zieve

City Council Position 6 candidate

Whole lot of irony going on here.
