Lighthouse Festival needs community support

By Julie Martin, Mukilteo Chamber of Commerce | Aug 22, 2018

Held the weekend after Labor Day each year, the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival is iconic for our community. Festival weekend is one of my favorite weekends of the year. It provides a fun, safe place for the community to get out and enjoy the weekend, whether it’s the children’s area, artisan marketplace, food booths or beer garden with live music. And of course, fireworks!

This year marks the 53rd Annual Lighthouse Festival. Over the years it has grown and changed to include a larger children’s area, more activities for teens and tweens, a tribute on Friday evening to military and first responders and a more inclusive artisan marketplace.

The mission of the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival Association is to plan and promote the Lighthouse Festival, while creating unity within our community and providing partnership opportunities for local service groups, businesses and individuals. Several of our local non-profit groups rely on their success at this three-day event to fund their scholarship funds and other service-oriented projects for our community.

The Lighthouse Festival Association consists of a board, committee chairs, and countless other volunteers, an Executive Director and Office Administrator. Each Festival takes a full year of planning.

Planning meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Mukilteo Chamber of Commerce (4902 76th St SW, Mukilteo). Committee/general meetings are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend and volunteer.

Funding for the Festival comes from the city of Mukilteo in the form of Lodging Tax Grants, sponsorship from local businesses, corporations and residents who become Friends of the Festival. In recent years, many of the costs for producing the Festival have doubled and tripled, while business participation and sponsorship have decreased. Although the board and committees are utilizing cost-saving measures wherever possible and fireworks have gone back to only Saturday night, the costs continue to increase.

If you have a business that would like to sponsor and/or have a booth at the Festival or are an individual who would like to support the Festival, please contact the Festival office at 425-353-5516 or email exec.director@mukfest.com.

Festival is about community and your help is needed to continue the Lighthouse Festival. The Festival Association needs board members, committee chairs, volunteers and financial support of the community.  Without this many tough choices will have to be made.

Will the Festival continue? What should be cut – the parade, children’s activities, fireworks?

I invite and encourage you to participate in this fun event, this year and going forward. Call or email the Festival office, come to a meeting and give back to our community. I look forward to volunteering with you and seeing you at the Festival. This year’s dates are Sept. 7-9.
