Man arrested for brandishing knife on ferry

A 39-year-old man was arrested for allegedly brandishing a knife at a juvenile on the M/V Kittitas ferry last Wednesday, Nov. 15.

Washington State Patrol received a call around 7:40 a.m. regarding the incident, and quickly went to the Mukilteo Ferry dock.

The Kittitas was staged offshore and did not dock until officers arrived just after 8 a.m.

An argument occurred in Clinton when the man accused the juvenile of theft, and allegedly brandished a knife at the juvenile.

“The incident started over in Clinton,” Kevin Fortino of Washington State Patrol said. “It ultimately escalated on the vessel.”

The officers contacted the suspect and took him into custody.

“He was detained, but he did not have any weapons on him,” Fortino said. “We did find a knife in the bathroom.”

Fortino said they are still investigating the incident, and are waiting on access to the ferry’s security cameras in order to get a better understanding of what happened.

“When we get access to those videos we’ll be able to build a stronger case,” Fortino said. “We’re still waiting on that.”

Fortino said officers did a good job of handling the situation.

“Vessel and terminal security troopers responded as quickly as they could, and were able to quickly get the situation under control once they boarded the vessel.” Fortino said. “It is our intention to complete a thorough investigation that covers the facts we are able to identify in order to give the prosecutor’s office a clear picture of what occurred in order to assist in their charging decision.”

Fortino said there were no independent witnesses to the alleged incident and it’s unknown whether the juvenile’s family will be pressing charges.
