Mariner is still a work in progress.

The young Marauders showed that last week in games against district rival Kamiak and Cascade.

The Knights scored early and kept the pressure on Mariner to prevail 5-1 in a Wesco 4A girls soccer game Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Kamiak High School.

Mariner (0-5-1 in the league. 0-6-2 overall) then bounced back with a 1-1 tie against the Bruins Thursday, Sept. 27, at Goddard Stadium.

Marauders coach Michelle Marklund said that the loss to Kamiak wasn’t one of Mariner’s better performances, though she was glad to see the team record its second goal of the season.

Sophomore Jay Jimenez scored off an assist from senior Olivia Satterlee in the second half.

“I thought Olivia actually set that up because Olivia broken them down defensively and then was able to play the ball into Jay and Jay was able to get a shot,” Marklund said. “Jay knows where the goal is all the time. Forward, backward, upside down, she always knows where the goal is. … Jay is a very good dribbler and is very good at taking players on.”

Marklund was pleased to see the Marauders be more aggressive on offense.

Freshman Nixie Tamayo scored the lone goal against Cascade.

The Marauders also had a strong performance in an earlier 3-0 loss to Monroe.

Marklund saw team cohesiveness against the Bearcats.

“Our defense played well together. Our midfield played well together,” she said. “We played as a team, whereas a lot of times in these games we look very disjointed.”

Part of this issue can be traced to lineup changes due to injuries, illnesses and other disruptions.

‘We’re not very deep as it is,” Marklund said.

Inexperience also contributes to some of the lack of cohesion.

“A lot of these players are sophomores,” Marklund said. “As they get a little bit more mature as players, we’re going to get better. We’re going to take our lumps for another year or so.”
