Younger Marauders gain some valuable playing time

The Mariner football team couldn’t overcome its inexperience.

Arlington scored three second-half touchdowns to pull away from the Marauders and claim a 35-7 victory in a nonconference game Friday, Sept. 6, at Arlington High School.

“It really kind of came down to nerves,” Mariner coach Mark Stewart said. “It was a typical first game. There were a lot of things we can learn from. We were missing some players, who will be eligible next week. That will help us get some more experience out on the field.”

Mariner’s starting running back and a couple of linemen were out. Their absence meant that the Marauders had to shift some people around.

“No excuses,” Stewart said. “Everybody was in the same situation.”

Two Mariner freshmen hit the field, which is the first that’s happened for Stewart in a long time.

After the Eagles scored a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead, the Marauders responded. Junior quarterback Jackson Cole connected on a 12-yard TD pass to senior wide receiver Roman Savchuk.

Arlington later seized the momentum by scoring a touchdown and 2-point conversion with 34 seconds left in the second quarter to head into halftime with a 15-8 lead.

The Mariner offense struggled after the first quarter when the Eagles crowded the box.

“We needed to make some plays,” Stewart said. “We’ve got to do a better job of running the ball.”

With the interior bottled up, the Marauders attempted to get to the outside with limited success. Mariner rushed for only 75 yards. Cole completed 5 of 12 passes for 89 yards with one TD and one interception.

“We had some opportunities in the passing game,” Stewart said.

The Mariner defense had nine players new to varsity.

“Our run defense was OK,” Stewart said. “Our tackling wasn’t great.”

Stewart nevertheless was encouraged by his team’s overall play.

“We can get better,” he said. “We were in the game.”

Mariner hosts Ballard in its home opener at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 13 at Goddard Stadium.
