McMahon stands up for homeless in Snohomish County | Letter

Editor, The Beacon:

Justin McMahon has earned my vote for state representative because Justin is understands the tragic problem of homelessness and the scarcity of affordable housing right here in Snohomish County.

This is an issue that affects all of us, not just the folks who are struggling to live without shelter.

In almost every greenbelt in Edmonds, Lynnwood and Mukilteo, we find people setting up camp because they have nowhere else to go.

With a lack of affordable housing options, a lack of shelter beds, a lack of mental healthcare facilities and a lack of living-wage jobs, more and more people every year are finding themselves unable to afford a home.

Justin has been endorsed by Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary and the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance for his commitment to public safety and ending homelessness.

Trenary has endorsed Justin because he believes that our jails are overcrowded with non-violent offenders who really need mental health care instead of jail time.

Justin has attended Housing & Homelessness Advocacy Day with me for the last several years, meeting with legislators to encourage them to keep affordable housing in the budget and the forefront of the debates.

Projections for population shift and housing demand in Snohomish County over the next 10-20 years show that we need to build an additional 25,000 units of affordable to housing to meet our population growth.

We need a strong voice in Olympia to keep the Legislature as a partner for this challenge.

Vote for Justin McMahon for state representative so he can put in place common sense solutions to make our communities safer and more vibrant for everyone – homeless or not.

In community,

Kimberly Toskey,
