Mukilteo athletes compete in Junior Olympic track meet

Kamiak High School’s Tara Koonce won the hammer throw and shot put at the Pacific Northwest Association Junior Olympic Championships June 23-25 in West Seattle.

Koonce, a member of the Get Strong First track club, placed first in the hammer throw by almost 20 feet on Friday. Koonce followed with a third place finish in the discus on Saturday and then returned to win the shot put on Sunday. Her throw of 38 feet, 5 inches, was a near personal best.

The top 8 athletes in each event advance to the regional championships in Spokane over the July 6 weekend with the top 5 from there advancing to the national championships in Kansas.

Kim Beard, a third grader at Northshore Christian Academy and a member of Get Strong First track club, placed third in the 6-pound shot put and improved her personal best with a throw of almost 20 feet. Beard also took fourth in the javelin, adding 4 feet to her personal best throw of more than 58 feet.
