Mukilteo Police Department to host shred event

Apr 17, 2019

The Mukilteo Police Department will host a Mukilteo “Shred-It” event on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will be held in the parking lot of Mukilteo City Hall (11930 Cyrus Way). The Mukilteo Police Department will provide a National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) certified mobile shred truck that will immediately shred documents at the location. This event is aimed at assisting Mukilteo residents with preventing identity theft victimization.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for residents to safely and securely discard documents that contain personal information. Shredding is an excellent way to help prevent becoming a victim of identity theft. I hope our residents make this a regular practice at home,” said Mukilteo Mayor Jennifer Gregerson.

Trash cans routinely contain credit card statements, pre-approved credit offers, bank account statements, wage and earning statements, utility bills, medical bills, expired identification, policy information, and retail invoices, all of which could contain useful information to would be identity thieves.

“Collecting information from discarded documents that contain sensitive information is one of the ways that identity thieves recreate a person’s identity. Regularly shredding documents that contain personal information can significantly reduce the chance of becoming a victim of identity theft,” said Police Chief Cheol Kang.

A National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) certified mobile shred truck will be available for four hours or until the truck is full, whichever comes first. Residents will be required to sign a “Secure Destruction Services Agreement” and will be provided a certificate of destruction upon request.

Cardboard, binder clips, three-ring binders, and electronic media will not be accepted. All paper to be shredded must be provided in person.
