Pair of Mariner players help Washington hoops team take second place at USA Games

A pair of Mariner players helped Team Washington finish second in the traditional female basketball tournament at the Special Olympics USA Games Thursday, July 5, at the University of Washington’s Alaska Airlines Arena.

Melany Hernandez and Agwin Atem, both from Mariner, were joined by Uzo Okoro of Edmonds and five other players. Team Washington fell 24-7 to Texas in the finals.

Team Washington opened play with a pair of victories. Washington defeated Southern California 26-12 and then knocked off Kansas 22-8 on Monday, July 2. Washington then fell 20-10 to Texas on Tuesday, July 3, before rebounding to beat Southern California 24-14 on Wednesday, July 4, in the semifinals.

The fourth annual USA Games featured more than 4,000 athletes and coaches from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Fourteen sports were featured including basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, golf, gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer, softball, stand up paddle board, swimming, tennis, volleyball and track and field (athletics).
