School board report for May 14

May 14, 2012

During its meeting on May 14, the Mukilteo School Board did the following:

Recognized the winners of the 2012 elementary spelling bee.

Recognized three students for their outstanding achievements. Honored were DeRhaun Mallett of Explorer Middle School, Joseph Helmy of Mukilteo Elementary, and Trevor Strand of Challenger Elementary.

Adopted new instructional materials for 5th grade reading and high school Philosophy of Literature class, Spanish for Literacy class, Human Physiology and Anatomy class, several business and information technology classes and two marketing classes, as well as the use of a new online software for credit-recovery classes.

Approved a revision to Board Policy 7250 (Rental or Lease of District Property).

Adopted the schedule of school board meetings for the 2012-13 school year. The board passed an amendment to the draft schedule that schedules the April 22, 2013, board dialogue session at Olympic View MS rather than at Discovery Elementary.

Heard staff reports about and discussed the following: an overview of the summer school program, a proposed revision to Board Policy 3330 (Emergency Removal From a Class, Subject or Activity), and the superintendent’s preliminary recommendation for the school district’s 2012-13 operating budget. The proposed budget calls for the use of about $1.8 million of the school district’s fund balance to cover the estimated budget shortfall and to pay for mandatory increases and cost increases in critical areas, such as the rising cost of fuel for school buses, the increased cost of maintaining aging school buildings, and the cost of adopting new curriculum for secondary social studies.

The school board discussed field trip requests matters during a work session held before the general business meeting and also held an executive session so that school board members could discuss the performance of an employee.
