Part-time tutors wanted for elementary school study

An organization that will be conducting a project in several Mukilteo elementary schools beginning this fall is seeking part-time research assistants.

The schools will participate in a two-year research study that is funded by the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education.

Under a grant awarded to the Oregon Research Institute, the project will provide extra doses of individual instruction for kindergarten and first grade students who have difficulty learning early reading skills.

Researchers are now recruiting part-time research assistant tutors with experience as a teaching assistant or other experience working with elementary-age children in school settings.

Tutors will work up to five hours a day, four days a week, during two five-week studies that will occur this coming fall and winter (October and November, and January and February).

The instruction to be provided through the project will help students develop word reading accuracy and fluency.

Lessons are designed for tutors to help students learn and practice word reading and spelling skills, and are based on a supplemental phonics intervention with an extensive evidence base.

Instruction will also strengthen cognitive flexibility that may improve word reading fluency, an important predictor of reading achievement. Benefits of an intensive early dose of instruction in these skills may accumulate over time.

Applications for tutoring positions should be submitted on the Oregon Research Institute website at https://ori.applicantpool.com/jobs/.
