Second half mistakes prove costly for Mariner in 28-13 defeat | Football

Mariner stayed right with Glacier Peak in the first half.

But a pair of turnovers in the third quarter enabled the Grizzlies to seize control and they went on to defeat the Marauders 28-13 in a Wesco 4A football game Friday, Oct. 12, at Goddard Stadium.

Mariner (2-3 in the league, 2-5 overall) only trailed 7-0 at halftime.

“I think our defense was doing a good job of bending but not breaking,” Marauders coach Mark Stewart said.

Glacier Peak backup quarterback Ryan Kinney scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter. First-team, all-league quarterback Ayden Ziomas was given the night off by Glacier Peak coach Nick Bender.

Kinney ran for a 1-yard touchdown and then threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Cramer in the second quarter as Glacier Peak (4-1, 6-1) took a 21-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Mariner cut the deficit to 21-6 on a 23-yard pass from junior quarterback Denis Biryuk to senior wide receiver Ryan Fry. Glacier Peak responded with a 1-yard scoring run by running Caelan Briggs.

Biryuk and Fry then connected on an 18-yard touchdown pass to close out the scoring.

Stewart praised his defense’s performance. He noted that even though Ziomas didn’t play, the Grizzlies still have a lot of playmakers.

“Our defense did a good job of getting off the field,” he said. “The kids were prepared. … Our defensive backs played really well, contesting all their passes. They did a good job of reading their routes. We got pressure on their quarterback.”

Kinney completed only 9 of 22 passes for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Biryuk was 13 of 25 for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted four times. Fry caught four passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Fernando Contreras had five receptions for 75 yards and Roman Savchuk caught four passes for 68 yards.

The Mariner ground game suffered a blow when junior running back Josiah Pesterkoff was forced to leave the game after getting hurt early in the game.

“That slowed our running game down a lot,” Stewart said.

Glacier Peak outgained Mariner 253 to 104 on the ground. Briggs rushed for 99 yards on 12 carries and scored one touchdown. Dylan Owen fished with 88 yards on 12 carries.

Stewart wants to see the Marauders cut down on their turnovers. Mariner also lost two fumbles.

“We have to have a little better decision making,” he said. “We have to take care of the ball. We get a little overconfident and a little careless.”

Mariner takes on Cascade at 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19 at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Bruins (0-5, 1-6) are coming off a 69-20 loss to Lake Stevens.
