Two Mukilteo hammer throwers had strong performances at the inaugural Fall Hammer Classic on Sunday, Oct. 1, at the University of Washington.

Kim Beard threw a nation- leading age group distance of 29.24 meters (95 feet, 11 inches) to win her division. Tara Koonce, a junior at Kamiak High School, placed second in the high school girls division to last season’s returning state champ.

The meet was open to hammer throw competitors from elementary school through high school at the Husky Track. The developmental athletes from 8-12 years old threw the 2-kilogram hammer while the high school girls threw a 4-kg ball.
