Many Mukilteans marked Monday as a day of mourning – and some celebrated – when officials broke ground at Paine Field to begin construction of a commercial passenger terminal.

Alaska Airlines has announced it will become the first airline to provide service at the two-gate terminal, beginning in the fall of 2018.

Alaska officials said they expect to provide service of nine flights per day, mainly up and down the West Coast.

With two terminals, peak capacity would be about 16 flights per day – 32 takeoffs and landings. However, so far no other airline has announced plans to serve Paine Field.

Meanwhile, opponents, including the city of Mukilteo, still hope to block commercial service. Contesting the environmental determination that allowed terminal construction, the city has appealed to the state Supreme Court.
