Lacking both proper eye-wear and a capable camera during the Aug. 21 eclipse, Carol Richards of Mukilteo opted to walk along Mukilteo’s waterfront and take pictures of Possession Sound.

“My thought was that there was going to be a million photos of the eclipse and my little iPhone could not compete with that,” she said. “Don't you know it, the waterfront was socked in with fog, so I changed my plan to taking photos of the ferry.”

While taking photos and video, Richards noticed something in the fog at about 9:46 a.m.: a crescent shape created by the partially eclipsed sun.

“I started taking photos like crazy,” she said. “I probably have 145 photos using different foregrounds.”
