The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating on two small fires that were intentionally set at Discovery Elementary on May 31.

Firefighters were dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at the school in the 11700 block of Meridian Avenue S. in unincorporated Snohomish County around 3 a.m. Discovery is in the Mukilteo School District.

“They extinguished a small fire burning at a door on the southwest corner of the building,” said Leslie Hynes, spokesperson for Snohomish County Fire District 1. “The firefighters put the fire out before flames got inside the building."

Mukilteo School District spokesperson Andy Muntz said the fire was at the door of the school's music room.

They also discovered that someone had attempted to ignite another fire at the school, near one of the school’s portables. The second fire had failed to ignite.

Damage to the door, adjacent wall and ceiling is estimated at $3,000, Hynes said.

Firefighters also discovered someone had attempted to set another fire outside a nearby portable classroom.

"While the door was heavily singed and fans had to be used to air out the room before school started this morning, everything else was back to normal at the school," Muntz said.

There are no suspects at this time. The arson investigation is being conducted by the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office.
