We can join battle to make world safer | Letter

Editor, The Beacon:

Great news about Rotary and partners winning the war on polio [“Rotary fighting war on polio,” page 2, Oct. 14].

Wagner Ajmal is correct: “No country is safe until polio is fully eradicated, completely obliterated.” This is true with all major diseases, as ebola recently showed.

Fortunately, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has been moving toward controlling these three pandemics for the first time in history. The Global Fund will need ongoing investments from countries and foundations to continue winning this battle.

Another piece of good news is the recent bill introduced in the House (H.R. 3706) and Senate (S. 1911), the Reach Every Mother and Child Act of 2015. This legislation targets the ending of daily preventable deaths of children under five (16,000) and mothers (over 800).

At the same time, it creates a more efficient and transparent USAID, our development aid agency.

We can join in this battle to make the world safer for everyone by calling or writing our representatives and senators to ask them to support this life-saving legislation and thanking to Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Dave Reichert for co-sponsoring this bipartisan bill.

Willie Dickerson,

Snohomish
